Booking terms and conditions

Fare Conditions

Interislander offers a range of fares at different times of the day to suit your travel needs. We have three fare types available:

Easy Change These are our most flexible fares and allow you cancel right up to time of check-in without any cancellation fees. So if you need to be flexible, these are the fares for you.
Saver Change These are our mid range fares and are available in greater numbers. Saver Change fares incur a 50% fee if cancelled.
Web Saver These are the cheapest way to get across Cook Strait! They are a great deal but once booked, they are non-refundable. Web Saver fares are only available through the internet or your nearest travel agent but numbers are limited - so if you want a great deal, make sure you book early!

All fare types allow you to change sailings subject to availability provided you advise us prior to check-in of your original sailing. Where the same priced fare is not available, an upgrade payment will be required. If you upgrade to a new fare type then you will retain the cancellation conditions of your original fare type.

Luggage Allowance

Larger baggage, including backpacks, must be checked-in at the Wellington or Picton terminals. Baggage can then be collected from the carousels at the arrival port. Except for sporting equipment , we will not accept individual baggage items, which exceed 32kg in weight or 200 linear cm (height + length + width) in dimension. For safety reasons, there are no exceptions for the weight restriction.

The luggage allowance is two (2) items of baggage per person. Additional baggage items in excess of this may be conveyed subject to availability, weight and size limitations. Additional items will incur an additional cost.

Sporting equipment such as surfboards, golf clubs, canoes and bicycles can be carried on our vessels for a small charge of $15.

Service Delays, Changes or Cancellations

Departure times are not guaranteed and schedules are subject to change. Interislander will not be liable for any loss suffered as a result of a service departing/arriving before or after the scheduled time or being cancelled altogether.


Interislander advises passengers to obtain travel insurance covering delays, changes or cancellations and to insure all vehicles, luggage and personal items.


Interislander may reassess at check-in the classification (type, width, length or weight) of any vehicle and applicable changes may be made to the fare charged. Any increase in a fare must be paid before the vehicle is loaded.

Vehicles will not be carried unless accompanied by a driver. Trailers or caravans will not be carried unless towed by another vehicle.

Carriage of a vehicle may be refused if Interislander considers it to be insecurely loaded or otherwise unsafe for carriage.

All vehicles must conform with laws, regulations and General Conditions relating to the carriage of Dangerous or Hazardous Goods or substances.

House trucks must have more than 50% of the vehicle permanently converted as living space.

Passenger Types

Interislander may reassess at check-in the classification of passenger type (adult, child, infant, senior or tertiary student) if this cannot be verified at check-in.

Hazardous Substances, Dangerous Goods, Arms and Munitions

Dangerous goods / hazardous substances include items such as compressed gases, flammable, explosive, corrosive, poisonous, toxic, infectious or magnetised materials or substances. Carriage may be permitted only if arranged with Interislander prior to the journey. Firearms must be checked-in at the terminal.

Interislander reserves the right to inspect any vehicle, baggage or other property.


Smoking onboard or at our terminals is not permitted except in designated outdoor areas.


Refunds conditions vary dependent upon the fare purchased. To be eligible for a refund, you must cancel your booking BEFORE check-in time. Cancellations can be made online via the Check or Change Booking page. Written requests must be made within 30 days of the scheduled day of departure - send your request to "Refunds, Interislander, Private Bag, Wellington" outlining the reason for the refund and providing your booking number and contact details.
